The Flintstones was originally created for an adult audience - originally aired on Friday evenings from 1960 to 1966 on ABC.
If you've ever seen Jackie Gleason's The Honeymooners - you'd know where Hanna-Barbera got the idea for their stone-age family. It is said that Gleason considered suing Hanna-Barbera for the rip-off but decided to let it pass.
The first season was sponsored by Winston Cigarettes and the original opening and closing titles included the Winston brand. Winston pulled out in 63, as The Flintstones became more of a family show.
The original shows were well written and pretty smart.

With gas at four bucks a gallon, I've been tempted to try our Fred's Foot-Mobile.
Weren't Fred and Wilma the first tv couple to share a double bed on the air?
The first cartoon couple. They didn't show any action or anything...even if it were for an adult audience. Yabba-Dabba-Doo-Me!
I think Al Gore would like for everyone to be riding a Fred Foot-Mobile. I once did a cartoon of that very idea.
I remember my Aunt Flora and Cousin Gary coming to visit from Chattanooga, telling us about the Flintstones. At that time, we didn't get. Hanna Barbera was some kind of machine to crank out the toons that they did.

Crank out they did
